After two years in France he studied jazz on the Guildhall School of Music and Drama before returning to Scotland. Artists and teams with whom Steele has recorded include Chizuko Yoshihiro, Tom Bancroft, Todd Gordon, Melanie O’Reilly, Larry Coryell, Aqua Bassino, Ambisonic, and Demusphere. Steele’s Twilight Dreams, for which he composed all the music, and which was arranged by pianist David Milligan, and on which Julian Argüelles guested, was a critical triumph.

He cites Chet Baker – whose, cool, swinging, pared-back “West Coast” sound he channels with ease – as his biggest affect, and names Louis Armstrong, “whose creativity, originality and emotional enjoying is second to none”, as his favourite trumpeter. It was enjoying Baker-style jazz that made Steele’s name again within the Nineties, but lately he has played extra traditional jazz due to his membership of various bands led by the singer Alison Affleck, a tireless champion of early styles of jazz.
